Alex Betaneli holds two prestigious chess titles (National Master in USA and FIDE Master at international level) and is a full-time chess instructor. He is a creator of a premier chess-teaching company, the Wisconsin Chess Academy: www.wichessacademy.com
Alex started playing chess as a kid while growing up in the USSR. After he emigrated to the United States at age of 15, Alex continued playing and improving as a chess player but also started a chess club at Madison West High School. He continued to run the West High club for many years after graduation, leading the team to an unprecedented thirteen State Championship titles. Alex also coached Madison Memorial team to the State Championship title in 2019.
Many of Alex's students have become good chess players and chess teachers in their own right. Kevin Li, of Madison, won several individual titles and represented Wisconsin at the National level. Tony Tu, of Madison, is well known for his outstanding teachings at the Madison Chinese Fine Arts school. Alex's students have also turned in some serious academic accomplishments, with many lawyers, doctors, engineers, teachers and professors practicing all over the United States. Alex stays in touch with his students when they visit Madison.
Currently, Alex enjoys running multiple chess programs in Madison as well as organizing chess tournaments. He runs the largest Wisconsin tournament annually and enjoys traveling around the World while competing in international events.
